Physical Description
LARGE CURVED PORTLAND STONE WALL WITH ANIMALS ENGRAVED IN PROFILE, AND SURROUNDED BY BRONZE HORSE, MULES AND DOG
ON LARGER PORTION OF BROKEN WALL ARE ELEPHANT, CAMELS, GOATS, PIGEONS, GLOW-WORMS, AND OTHER ANIMALS CARVED IN BAS-RELIEF. TWO BRONZE MULES BEARING EQUIPMENT STAND AT FRONT OF MEMORIAL AND BRONZE HORSE AND DOG STAND BEHIND IT. ON BACK OF WALL IS ENGRAVED OUTLINE OF ANIMALS, REPRESENTING GHOSTLY SILHOUETTE OF THOSE KILLED.
A LIST OF MAJOR DONORS IS ON THE REVERSE WALL.

HRH The Princess Royal is the Patron of the Animals in War Memorial Appeal
The memorial appeal followed an article in the Daily Telegraph and was taken up by Major General Peter Davies who formed a fundraising committee.
Jilly Cooper's book 'Animals in War' (1983) provided background history. |
