'FOUR SNARLING POLAR BEARS GINGERLY BACK UP DIAMETRICAL BUTTRESSES TO PROTECT AN ARCHED TEMPIETTO WITH ITS ARCHES CURVING OUTWARDS TO UPHOLD A TRUNCATED SPIRE.THIS IS WREATHED WITH ROPES, ANCHORS AND MILITARY CROSSES. ABOVE, THE CAPTAIN REPOSES ON HIS SWORD; BENEATH HIM, NICHES ENSHRINE INSCRIPTIONS AND TRIPLE-MASTED BOATS EMBEDDED IN THE ICE.' (WILLIAMS)

CAPTAIN FRANCIS CROZIER SAILED WITH SIR JOHN FRANKLIN ON THE ATTEMPT TO SEEK THE NORTH-WEST PASSAGE IN 1845.

FRANKLIN DIED DURING THE EXPEDITION AND FOLLOWING FRANKLIN'S DEATH CROZIER COMMANDED THE UNSUCCESSFUL RETURN MARCH SOUTH. HE IS THOUGHT TO HAVE DIED IN 1848 WHILST ATTEMPTING THE RETURN JOURNEY, BUT AN EXACT DATE OF DEATH IS NOT KNOWN.
