UNTO THE HONOUR AND SERVICE OF GOD./ THE PARAPET AND ROOF OF THIS TOWER/ WERE RECONSTRUCTED IN MAY 1870/ IN TOKEN OF THE CHERISHED MEMORY/ OF OSWALD CARR, CAPTAIN IN THE ROYAL ARTILLERY./ HE WAS BORN AND BROUGHT UP IN HEDGELEY,/ AND HE OFTEN EXPRESSED A HOPE THAT THE TOWER/ OF THE PARISH CHURCH MIGHT BE/ RESTORED TO ITS LIKENESS./ HE FELL IN ACTION IN THE COLONY OF NEW ZEALAND/ ON 8TH AUGUST, 1868, AGED 31 TEARS./ FROM A SUM OF MILITARY PAY/ THEN DUE TO THEIR MOST DEAR SON,/ THE WORK HAS BEEN EFFECTED BY HIS PARENTS.
