Co-ordinator's Comments:

Sir Robert Thomas contributed £20,000 to the cost of the memorial scheme which allocated funds to the gateway, science laboratories and a scholarship programme. Bangor University was formerly known as University College of North Wales

A competition for the memorial design was held in 1923. The assessors of the competition were Lord Plymouth and Sir aston Webb and the rules stated that the memorial must be in the form of a building with sculpture as a feature.
