Co-ordinator's Comments:

This memorial is one of only two to have been paid for by the government. All other war memorials have been erected through public and/or private funding.

The cenotaph was unveiled on the same day as the burial of the Unknown Warrior. Film footage of the repatriation of the unknown warrior and unveiling of the Cenotaph is held by the Imperial War Museum.

Other: Work 20/139 - document held at the National Archives, Kew which outlines that the Cenotaph was commissioned by the Commissioners of Public Buildings and Works. The Government paid for the Cenotaph and funding was voted for by Parliament. Sir Edwin Lutyens waived payment of his fees.

Other: Work 13/244 - document held at the National Archives, Kew holding the contract with the builders, architect's drawings, specifications and bills of quantities.
